I’m currently in the San Diego area attending Perfect Health, an amazing course in Ayurvedic wellness, at the Chopra Center. I’m thrilled to be furthering my happiness and wellness education with the information I’m learning here, so that I can share it with you, and help you live a Happy Well Lifestyle!
You might be asking what is Ayurveda anyway? Ayurveda is a 5,000+ year old “Science of Life” wellness practice, from which all other Eastern Wellness practices originated, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Contrary to what some may think, Ayurveda is not “crazy woo woo stuff”. There is now scientific research and medical proof being conducted on many aspects of Ayurveda Wellness by the Chopra Medical Center in combination with UC San Francisco, Duke University, Harvard, the National Institute for Health, and the National Cancer Institute. India, where Ayurvedic wellness is regularly practiced, has one of the lowest rates of cancer in the world.
Ayurveda encompasses all aspects of mind-body wellness: meditation, yoga, breathing techniques, eating for your particular body constitution, and regular self care including daily massages. Now who wouldn’t want that?!
Auyrveda categorizes three main body constitutions, or Doshas. You can take this Dosha Quiz to find out your Dosha type. Certain foods, herbs, and spices as well as lifestyle behaviors can enhance or help to balance your Dosha for optimal wellness. I’ll be writing more about eating for your Dosha in future posts.
The Chopra Center’s Perfect Health course encompasses topics including Nourishment for Mind, Body and Soul; Food as Medicine; Detoxification, Purification, and Rejuvenation; Your Inner Pharmacy; as well as daily Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurvedic massage; plus a medical consult with on of the staff M.D.s who are also trained in Ayurvedic wellness.
I would highly recommend checking out a week of Perfect Health if you are at all interested in mind-body medicine. The knowledge you’ll learn is incredible, plus the different types of massages you will experience each day are just wonderful!
