Happy, HEALTHY New Year! Did you make a resolution or intention to start a healthier lifestyle this year? As I wrote about last year, the difference between making a resolution or setting an intention is more than just semantics.
Studies show just an 8% success rate in keeping a New Years resolution, vs 91% success rate in achieving goals for those who set an intention and create an action plan. Pretty impressive! Creating an action plan is the key.
So what if you need help or accountability with creating those healthy intentions and goals, and sticking to them?
Currently I’m creating an online course to help you do just that ~ to live a Happy Well Lifestyle! Stay tuned for more info soon on my new course and how you can participate. In the mean time I’m sharing some of my top Healthy New Year Resources. The info you learn here can help you get and STAY on track with your wellness intentions and goals in 2018.
Knowledge is Power
In the past five-to-ten-years the health and wellness industry has been turned upside-down. New research and discoveries now negate much of the past 100-years of how we “thought” the body worked. Unfortunately many old-school health practitioners may be practicing what they learned years ago. If they aren’t keeping up with the most recent studies and how quickly things are changing…your health may pay. So it’s important that people educate themselves and take their wellness back into their own hands. Luckily there are many resources in books and online to help you do just that.
Since the mapping of the human genome we have learned SO MUCH about the human body. Recent research has shed new light on: the importance of gut-health to our overall health; the amazing gut-brain connection; and how the whole body works synergistically together with a mind-body connection—not as separate pieces that each need to see a “specialist.”
Below are some resources that I use with my own health coaching clients, and highly recommend. If you’re visiting or living in Mexico, I recently noticed that a couple of these books are now available in Spanish at Costco in Mexico too!
Healthy New Year Resources
Clean Gut is the number one go-to resource for my husband and myself, as well as working with my health coaching clients. If I only had time to read ONE health and wellness book, this would be it. Dr. Alejandro Junger introduces the concept of the gut microbiome and how critically important it is is to our overall health and wellness. Having a healthy microbiome boosts your immune system, helps you lose weight, and helps to fight off cancer cells. It can even potentially ward off dementia and Alzheimer’s. And who does’t want that?!
He explains how our guts likely got so messed up to begin with. Then gives you a 21-day whole-foods cleanse to help repair your gut and get you back on track. The cleanse includes so many delicious recipes you won’t feel like you’re on a cleanse at all. Except that you may find yourself feeling WAY better and having more energy, not to mention possibly losing weight! The first time I read this book and did the cleanse about five years ago, I lost 15-lbs, and have never regained it. If you give yourself ONE healthy gift this year, READ Clean Gut and follow the 21-day cleanse. Your mind-boody-soul will thank you.
This book was a real eye-opener to me. Dr. David Perlmutter is a Neurologist specializing in dementia and Alzheimer’s. In Grain Brain he talks about the volumes of processed (simple) carbohydrates that Western societies have notoriously been consuming over the past 50+ years. And how those simple carbs have affected our over all health and wellness. Dr. Perlmutter also discusses numerous studies showing how a diet high in processed carbs can potentially lead to dementia, Alzheimer’s and other inflammation-based illnesses like heart disease and cancer as you age.
This is not to say that all carbohydrates are bad for you. When you eat complex carbohydrates from veggies, nuts and seeds, and whole grains like brown rice or quinoa those are healthy forms of carbohydrates that don’t have the same damaging impact on your body that the processed carbs do. Grain Brain is a fascinating read that will change your relationship with carbohydrates.
Integrative Nutrition by Joshua Rosenthal was one of my textbooks in Nutrition school. It’s written for the lay person and is packed full of information on holistic nutrition and wellness including the theory of bio-individuality: EVERY-BODY is different. This means there is no one-size-fits-all diet, medicine, or cure that will work for everyone. You need to take into account every individual’s body, genes, metabolism, physical abilities, food intolerance’s, and more.
Joshua Rosenthal also introduces the concept of Primary Foods and Secondary Foods. Secondary Foods being the food and meals we ingest, while Primary Foods are the other things in our life that nourish us from our relationships and careers, to our spirituality, creativity, physical activity, etc.
If you want to dive deeper into the human body and how all of our parts are holistically integrated, Holistic Anatomy is an excellent read. The blurb on Amazon gives a great overview: “Basic scientific terminology and detailed descriptions are interwoven with informal, sometimes humorous observations, facts, and ideas about life. The first half of the book covers basic anatomy and physiology, describing each major system of the body and how they interrelate. This part includes a thoughtful discussion of aging and the dying process. The second half focuses on models of health and disease, both traditional and holistic. Topics include western pathology, emotional health, five element medicine, and the spiritual cause for disease.”
Holistic Anatomy is also written in layperson terms and is a very informative read integrating Western and Eastern philosophies of holistic wellness.
Broken Brain Documentary
While I haven’t seen the Broken Brain Documentary with Dr. Mark Hyman yet because it airs for the first time next week, on January 17tth, I wanted to bring it to your attention because knowing that Dr. Hyman is behind this free documentary, I think it’s going to be well worth seeing.
Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. is a Functional Medical Doctor that I follow regularly. As the author of several books, he’s full of cutting-edge information on sugar, fats, the gut microbiome, and the brain. This free 8-day docu-series reveals what conditions like Alzheimer’s, Dementia, ADHD, Autism, Depression, Anxiety, and Brain Fog have in common. Plus, it offers practical steps to help you and your friends and family optimize your brain function – and reclaim your health, energy + mental clarity. I’ll be watching it and have no doubt it will be packed with great info.
Pilates Reformer Class
Wow, I feel like a born-again Pilates Reformer evangelist! Besides my yoga practice, I’ve tried many different types workout programs over the years, from Aerobics to Zumba and everything in-between. I’ve even done my fair share of Pilates matt classes. But if you’ve never tried a Pilates Reformer, it’s different!
This year for Christmas my husband, Captain Kirk, and I gave each other private Pilates Reformer Classes. And wow are we HOOKED!! I’ve only had four classes so far, and already I can see and feel a difference in my muscle tone, strength, weight, and energy. IMPRESSIVE! No other type of exercise has ever worked so fast and so well for me. Warning, it’s HARD work, and it’s not cheap, but it’s totally worth every dime. Your body will thank you.
Pilates instructors vary from place to place, so it’s best to get a personal recommendation from someone you trust. If they are a good Pilates instructor, they should offer you a free Reformer Class to try it out and make sure it’s a good fit for you (remember that word “Bio-individuality” above? It might not be your thing, and everyone may not see the same results so quickly.) There are two Pilates Reformer instructors that I can personally recommend, Sara in Seattle, and Teresa in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, if you’re in either of those two locations check them out, and please let them know I sent you.
