5 Get Well Quick Remedies

get-well-remediesKnock-on-wood, I’ve managed to stay very healthy for the past few winters when it seems like everyone around me is getting sick. What’s my trick?

For starters, I try to get plenty of sleep, a minimum of eight-hours per night. I also keep well hydrated, since dried out mucous membranes create the perfect environment for virus and bacteria to take hold. And I wash my hands frequently, especially after touching things like door handles, and ATM keypads, or shaking someone’s hand (after all, you never know where their hand has just been.)

I also keep a small bottle of my home-made essential oil hand sanitizer in my purse and car. Not only does it kill germs, but it smells GREAT too!

But on those rare occasions when I do pick up some cold or flu bug, I attack back right away. What’s in my arsenal of herbal get well quick remedies?

Here are my top 5 get well quick remedies for any cold or flu:

  1. Natural Factors Anti-V Formula . This potent herbal formula will stop a cold, flu or other virus in its tracks. It also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to contribute to overall improved health and wellness.
  2. Nature’s Answer Sambucus Immune Support. Besides being a great immune booster, Sambucus (Black Elderberry), contains quercetin, which helps to thin mucous.
  3. Xlear Sinus Clear Spray. Xlear contains Xylitol, a natural anti-microbial. I had a sinus infection for two months last fall, which antibiotics wouldn’t touch (because apparently it wasn’t bacterial infection.) After using Xyler for only five days, my sinus infection was finally gone. I’ve also used this during long flights to keep my nasal mucous membranes from drying out mid-flight.
  4. 10,000 IU Vitamin A. Vitamin A has strong anti-viral properties and my naturopath recommends taking 10,000 daily at the first hint of a cold or flu. Because vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin it is possible to take too much, so it is not recommended to take this high of a dosage for more than a week.
  5. Cold Remedy Tea. This cold remedy tea recipe below comes from my favorite herbal remedy book, The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal.

Cold Remedy Tea

1/3 Elderberry Flower
1/3 Yarrow Flower
1/3 Peppermint

This tea is made with equal parts of three herbs. I usually make several ounces of dried tea at a time, then use about one tablespoon in a tea strainer along with 8 oz. of water to make the tea.

Start drinking it at the first signs of a cold or flu, and drink three or more cups a day. This tea can stop a new cold in its tracks, or significantly shorten the duration that you are feeling miserable.

You can find the ingredients at any local herbalist shop. In Seattle I shop at Dandelion Botanical, or Herban Wellness in Kirkland. If you don’t have a local herbal resource, you can purchase the ingredients online at Mountain Rose Herbs.

Keep these herbal remedies on hand, and if you start to feel a cold or flu coming on, fight back right away.

      Thanks for the reply Kari, the cold tea really works well! I’ve started drinking it at the first hint of a cold, and had the cold totally vanish before it really started. I keep some on hand just in case. Be Happy Be Well!

    Thanks Heidi, I did fly to New England for a week the 2nd week of March and I must’ve caught this on the plane…I am usually really healthy too, been drinking LOTS of water and Throat Coat Tea which I love (slippery elm, licorice root, etc) Feel worse cuz D has to put up with me lying around when we have so much to accomplish in the next few months. I am determined to get well soon!
