I’ve been following Dr. Lissa Rankin’s incredible work for several months now, and have just finished reading her new book Mind Over Medicine.
Are you living in a constant flight-or-fight “stress response” to life? Many of us are stressed out over careers we don’t like, trying to raise our kids “right”, fighting with spouses over money, or taking care of aging parents. These constant stressors take their toll on our nervous system and can have lasting impacts on our health.
In our cave-man days, the flight-or-fight mechanism was very useful when we were faced-to-face with a saber-toothed tiger. But once that tiger left, our body would naturally revert back to relaxation mode. Today many of us are constantly bombarded with stressful situations that keep our cortisol levels high, without returning our body to relaxation mode. And sadly our nervous system doesn’t discern between a saber-toothed tiger threat, or someone steeling your parking space at the grocery store.
