There are so many books on my to-read list I sometimes wonder when I’ll find the time to read them all. I love reading health and wellness books not only to learn more myself, but also to share the info with all of you.
This weekend on a long road trip, I finally had the time to plow through one book that had been at the top of my list for months: New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar—Your Brain’s Silent Killers, by Dr. David Perlmutter, neurologist. It was SO good, I had to share it with you in this book review.
Doesn’t it seem like almost daily a new medical or nutrition study turns what we used to “know”, on it’s ear? Grain Brain asks the questions: Are Sugar and Carbohydrates Harming Your Brain? Is Cholesterol Actually Good for Your Brain? What Dr. David Perlmutter has to say is mind-blowing. This is truly one of the most informative health and wellness books I have ever read…
Butter is Bad For You…Or is it Good For You?
Over the years there have been so many theories, who can keep track anymore?
- Butter is bad for you, margarine is good for you… no wait!
Margarine is bad for you, butter is good for you?
- Eggs are bad for you… or are they good for you?
- Low-fat, high-carb is good… or is it high-fat, low-carb that’s good?
- Sugar is bad for you… yep, that one’s true!
We are on the cutting edge of new science related to nutrition and wellness. Scientists first mapped the human genome about ten years ago. And it’s only been about twenty years since doctors have been able to use an fMRI to really look inside the brain and see without a doubt how things affect the brain.
Studies done at the Mayo Clinic, University of San Francisco, UCLA, and other prestigious universities around the globe are connecting the dots and discovering the same thing.
Here are just a few of the things you’ll learn in this fascinating book:
Your Brain is Mostly Fat
Grain Brain shows us how our brain, which is 70% fat, shockingly needs cholesterol to survive and thrive, and a LOT of it. The “high cholesterol causes heart disease” theory has been debunked.
Not one study done in the past 30 years has been able to prove that old theory…yet millions of people are still on statin drugs to “lower their cholesterol”, because sadly big pharma wants to make money, and not all doctors keep up on the latest studies.
Research is now linking statin drugs to dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Carbs, Diabetes, and Brain Disease
The human body has not evolved in the past 10-million years, yet our food sources have drastically changed just in the past 100 years. Your great-grandparents would not even recognize most of what you eat today as being “food.” Our bodies can’t keep up with all of the artificial chemicals, processed carbohydrates, and sugar.
The increased rate of diabetes, caused by the higher carbohydrate and sugar consumption just since the 1970’s, has also been linked to increased dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
In fact, some scientists and doctors are starting to call Alzheimer’s “Type 3 diabetes”, or “diabetes of the brain”, because Alzheimer’s has been directly linked to diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.
So many studies have linked sugar consumption and high-carb diets to brain disease; we cannot ignore this factor any longer.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s: It’s Your Choice
While a very small number of people may be genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, studies show that the vast majority have developed it due to eating a high-carbohydrate, high-sugar diet.
While you may not want to give up your pasta or pizza, your cookies, cake or beer, the future health of your brain is definitely in your own hands. The sooner you read Grain Brain, and start to make Dr. Perlmutter’s recommended dietary changes, the more quickly you can stop or reverse damage that’s already been done. Your brain will thank you. As will your friends and family…
Please leave a reply to let me know how you liked Grain Brain. I can’t recommend it enough!
