5 Tips to De-Stress Post Holidays

de-stress like a catHow was your holiday season? Was it fun, or was it stressful? I’ve written on this topic before, but I think the subject of “how to de-stress” bears repeating at this time of year. While the holiday season can be filled with sparkles, light, and laughter, the post-holidays can be a stressful time of year. (Except for my cat Tosh!)

For many it’s back-to-the-grind after a week or two of vacation. For others being around family (or not having family near) was just too much to handle. Some of my family and friends spent the holiday with the flu and that’s no fun! And then there are those post-holiday credit card bills piling up. Do any of these ring a bell with you?

We’ve had a combination of stressful events this holiday season. For me, the holidays are all about having lots of family and friends around. And while I love my husband and my kittens, the holidays were just not the same with only the 4 of us.

We also have several close friends dealing with cancer right now. Would this disease just go AWAY? Sending healing thoughts and Reiki their way while giving gratitude for our own good health each day. And the economy still hasn’t picked up so as to be noticeable by us—-bring strapped for money over the holidays is never fun.

So what do we do to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps and carry on? Here are 5 Tips to De-Stress.

5 Tips to De-Stress

  1. Meditate every day. We try to meditate both morning and evening. Sometimes it’s hard to fit it in, but we have set an Intention to make that more of a reality this year. Meditation is a great way to de-stress and focus, and it has many health benefits, check out this article to learn more: What Happens To The Brain When You Meditate. If you are new to meditation, or would like to try it out, the Chopra Center has some wonderful guided meditations to check out.
  2. Practice Gratitude. Research has shown that verbally practicing gratitude “makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress.” Start a gratitude jar this year. At the end of the year take the time to read all of the things you were grateful for and revel in what a great year it really was.
  3. Exercise. Try as I might, this one is always tough for me. As much as I know about the importance of exercise for our health and wellbeing, actually making myself exercise is not very easy. Although I do get in 3-5 days of yoga a week, I’ve made another Intention to get in more cardio work this year. I plan to give my Fitbit, a good workout and throw in some weight training as well.
  4. Get grounded with a Shower. That’s right, taking a shower is very grounding. Nor only are your feet on the ground (or ceramic), you are also covered in water which helps conduct the electric current from your body down into the ground (or down the drain.) Here are a few more ways to get grounded.
  5. Rose Oil. A great aromatherapy to relieve stress is Rose Oil. Although pure rose oil can be fairly pricey, this Aura Cacia Essential Oil Rose Absolute With Jojoba , works wonders. Big thanks to my amazing herbalist Mom for this tip!
